Introduction

For over thirty years, John Michael Montgomery has been a cornerstone of country music, his heartfelt ballads and upbeat anthems forming the soundtrack to countless lives. With iconic hits like “I Swear,” “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” and “Life’s A Dance,” he crafted a legacy of authentic storytelling. Now, the Kentucky native has announced that he is ready to hang up his touring hat, scheduling one last ride for his dedicated fans.

In a heartfelt announcement, Montgomery revealed that his final concert, aptly named “The Road Home: The Final Concert,” will take place on December 12, 2025, at the legendary Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. The choice of venue is no coincidence; it’s a poignant return to his roots, a final bow in the state that raised him.

This farewell performance is set to be more than just a concert—it’s a true family affair. Sharing the stage with him will be his brother, Eddie Montgomery of the acclaimed duo Montgomery Gentry, his talented son, Walker Montgomery, and his son-in-law, Travis Denning. This lineup promises an evening filled not only with nostalgia but also with the powerful spirit of a musical dynasty coming together to celebrate a remarkable career.

“I stepped on a tour bus for the first time in 1992 and haven’t looked back since, but now it’s time to bring it all back home for my last concert and I can’t think of a better place than Rupp Arena,” Montgomery shared. “I wanted to celebrate this occasion with my family, so I invited some of them to perform with me. We are going to have a lot of fun and end this ride in a big way.”
The decision to step away from full-time touring, which he first hinted at in 2024, comes after a period of significant health challenges. In 2022, Montgomery was involved in a serious tour bus accident that left him with broken ribs and other injuries. This, combined with a past surgery for an acoustic neuroma, has made the rigorous demands of road life increasingly difficult. His choice reflects a desire to prioritize his well-being and spend more time with his loved ones after a lifetime dedicated to his music and his fans.

While he is retiring from the road, Montgomery has reassured fans that his love for performing remains. He hasn’t ruled out occasional stage appearances in the future, admitting he would miss the roar of the crowd and the joy of singing along with his audience too much to quit entirely. For now, however, the “The Road Home” concert marks the official, emotional conclusion to an incredible chapter in country music history. It’s a final opportunity for fans to gather and give one last standing ovation to an artist who has given them so much.
